News Briefing – Week of 18 July

  • Insight Crime has published an analysis of Brazil’s role as a country of departure for cocaine to Africa, Asia and Europe with the port of Santos as a principal transatlantic shipping point.
  • Reportedly raw materials for cocaine production and shipments from Colombia have increased.  Drug traffickers have improved their smuggling techniques making it more complicated to stop the shipments.
  • The ECOWAS Commission reported that West African experts on epidemiology met 13th-14th July in Nigeria to examine the growth of illicit drug supply in the region. Along these two days, participants discussed regional and national responses to drug control.
  • Cape Town central police spokesperson reported the discovery of cocaine at the Pepperclub Hotel & Spa. The cocaine has a street value of R600, 000. According to the authorities, no arrests have been made.
