A new police unit was established in the Indian city of Ramanathapuram, Tamilnadu province, to prevent and fight drug trafficking between India and Sri Lanka.

A Serbian court sentenced Darko Saric, a Balkan drug lord, to 20 years in prison for allegedly smuggling cocaine from Colombia, Argentina and Uruguay through Balkan countries to Western Europe.

The Coast Guard seized approximately 100 kg of cocaine transported on a fishing vessel in the Caribbean Sea, near Dominican Republic. Two Guyanese and three Jamaican smugglers were arrested.

Tha Colombian police seized 214 kg of cocaine from an ambulance that was travelling from Putumayo province to the port of Cartagena. The drug, valued approximately US$6 million, was concealed in the roof of the ambulance.

A woman was arrested at Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg for allegedly smuggling a quantity of drugs (cocaine included) worth approximately US$160,000. The woman was returning to South Africa from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

French customs officials allegedly seized more than 2 tons of cocaine travelling on a vessel in the Caribbean, near Martinique. One Venezuelan and two Spanish citizens were arrested.

According to UN data lately released, Colombia has surpassed Peru in land under coca cultivation, with Peru experiencing a drop in acreage for coca leaves.
